India’s dynamic urban population is on the move as transportation in its forward-thinking cities undergoes an unprecedented transformation. The diverse mix of demographics driving change includes urban commuters dependent on metros and buses, eco-conscious millennials and Gen Z demanding sustainable, tech-enabled mobility and working professionals wanting convenience and safety.

Congestion, pollution and inadequate transport infrastructure have been the catalyst for a wave of innovation and investment in smart, efficient, and sustainable urban mobility. And as urban centres like Mumbai and Delhi reimagine mobility with new metro systems and electric buses, ridership across India’s major cities continues to grow.

Data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs shows that annual ridership in Delhi has increased from 1.12 billion in 2015 to 2.03 billion in 2023, suggesting a shift away from private car use towards public transportation and micromobility options, among other factors.

While car ownership continues to flourish, improved public transport infrastructure alongside innovations like the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) and UPI-powered ticketing, is encouraging a change in habits. It’s fuelled by contactless payments and real-time updates that put the customer first by making mobility frictionless for commuters expecting convenience, speed and transparency in their journeys.

Increased adoption of EVs, e-scooters and ride-sharing also suggests a growing willingness to switch from private transport, especially for last-mile connectivity. AI-driven traffic management and predictive analytics are further boosting efficiency and safety, with real-time data bringing a 10 to 15% reduction in average commute times and enhanced safety through proactive accident prevention.

While private vehicle use remains dominant in some areas, the blend of policy, technology and changing consumer expectations indicates a growing shift toward mass transit and sustainable mobility among younger, urban populations.

India’s evolving transport ecosystem reflects a change in how people move, who is moving and why they’re choosing smarter, greener ways to do it… elevating the quality of life for millions in the process.
