Navigating change: The Departure of Maestro and V PAY for Global Acceptance and Security
29 / 01 / 2025
In this blog, explore how Dutch banks are transitioning from Maestro and V PAY to Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit. Learn how this pivotal move enhances global acceptance and security while introducing cutting-edge payment technologies. Discover the new online and travel payment conveniences that will redefine your banking experience.

In the early 2000s the Dutch banks replaced the domestic PIN branded bank cards - with CIRRUS logo, the network that allowed cardholders to withdraw cash at ATMs outside of their home country - with the Maestro branded cards. In the Netherlands we bid farewell to the PIN brand, where the countries around us choose to have a dual branded card, the Maestro scheme in combination with their domestic scheme (e.g. Bancontact in Belgium, Girokart in Germany and Carte Bancaire in France).
The transition took place as part of a rebranding effort by Mastercard, which aimed to unify its payment brands under the Maestro name, especially in Europe. The Dutch banks aimed to create a more unified and standardized payment system across Europe. By adopting the Maestro brand, they could align its payment systems more closely with international practices, facilitating cross-border transactions and interoperability with other European countries. For cardholders the Maestro brand facilitated easier acceptance within Europe, which was increasingly important as international travel became more common. In the 2010s Visa had a significant uptake of V PAY cards in the Netherlands, as several Dutch banks started to issue V PAY debit cards alongside their traditional Maestro cards.
Now, twenty years after the discontinuation of the PIN brand, it is time to say goodbye again, this time to the Maestro and V PAY debit card brand. Where the challenger banks initiated the launch of Debit Mastercard almost a decade ago, starting last year, several banks decided to replace their Maestro and V PAY branded cards by Debit Mastercard (DMC) and Visa Debit (VD) cards. The switch to DMC and VD cards reflects a broader trend in the payment industry toward offering more efficient, secure, and globally accepted payment solutions. With only one dominant brand the schemes are able to present a consistent and recognizable global offering, simplifying their marketing strategy.
Worldline is committed to facilitating the transition to Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit by providing robust support for the issuance of these new brands. Our stand-in services have been meticulously adjusted to ensure seamless integration and operational efficiency for financial institutions adopting these global payment brands. By enhancing our systems to fully accommodate the specifications and requirements of Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit, we empower banks to issue these cards with confidence.
However, this transition is not without its challenges. The infrastructure supporting these new payment brands must be capable of handling increased transaction volumes and ensuring high levels of security and reliability. Financial institutions, payment processors, and merchants will need to upgrade their systems and software to accommodate the new standards and features associated with DMC and VD cards. Additionally, ensuring interoperability between various payment systems will require close collaboration among stakeholders. Addressing these infrastructure challenges effectively will be crucial for a smooth transition and to fully realize the benefits associated with the new debit card offerings.
Maestro and V PAY cards are gradually replaced by the Dutch banks, some at a faster pace than others. What will be the benefits of Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit for the cardholder?
Wider acceptance: both are recognized instore payment brands globally, increasing convenience for cardholders traveling also outside Europe, offering seamless payment experiences.
Online payments: digital transactions, mobile wallets, and e-commerce usage has increased rapidly over the past years, DMC and VD provide the ability to order online with your debit card, safely, in combination with two-factor authentication.
Enhanced features: Schemes are continually investing in cutting-edge features and technologies, rolling them out first to their extensive network of global brands. This means that DMC and VD customers will be the first to experience the latest innovations in payment security and convenience, ensuring they enjoy a truly exceptional and seamless banking experience.
As we embrace this shift from Maestro and V PAY to Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit, we not only honour two decades of legacy but also welcome a new era of payment possibilities for cardholders.
