Worldline successfully processes record number of electronic payments on Black Friday in Belgium

Brussels — 02 / 12 / 2019

Black Friday - a commercial event that originated in the United States and is now well-known in Belgium - is growing in popularity every year. This is reflected in the statistics: on Friday 29 November, Worldline, the European market leader in payment and transaction services, processed a record number of 10,432,103 electronic transactions in both in-store and online. This is an increase of 25% compared to a normal Friday (22/11).

La Défense, Paris, France
  • An all-time record of 10.432.103 electronic payments were processed on Friday 29 November
  • Increase of 25% in payment transactions on Black Friday compared to a normal Friday (22/11)
  • Increase of 87% in e-commerce on Black Friday compared to a normal Friday (22/11)
  • Sunday 1 December was the best Sunday of the year to date in the field of electronic payments

Record day for electronic payment transactions

Black Friday 2019 set an all-time record for electronic payments in Belgium, shattering the previous record set on Saturday 22 December 2018, when we processed 10,061,396 transactions. Furthermore, it confirms the growing popularity of electronic payments. In 2018 we processed a total of 2.3 billion electronic payments, a record that we have already broken this year on Black Friday. More than one in ten payments in physical stores on Black Friday were made with a contactless card or mobile phone.

Record day for e-commerce

Although the effect of Black Friday is noticeable in both physical and online stores, the impact of this event is even more striking in e-commerce. This year Worldline saw an increase of 87% in the number of e-commerce transactions compared to a normal Friday (22/11). Black Friday 2019 topped all other e-commerce days, followed by Black Friday 2018 and Sunday 1 December 2019.

Black Weekend: the best Sunday of the year

We also note that the impact of Black Friday now extends over several days, whereas in previous years it only focused on Fridays. This year, Belgian consumers benefited from the many promotions offered throughout the entire weekend: 23% more transactions were carried out compared with the same weekend last year (+16.5% compared to the previous weekend this year).

Saturday 30 November was the third most important day ever for electronic payments with a total of 9,934,587 electronic transactions.

Sunday 1 December was the best Sunday of the year (including the annual sale periods) with 5,165,647 electronic transactions in total.

Cyber Monday

This morning, Worldline also noted that the number of electronic transactions increased by 12% compared to the same period last Monday (25/11). This trend is even more striking in e-commerce with 39% more transactions.

The figures show that Black Friday has not only become an important annual commercial event in Belgium, but that it has also grown into a 'Black Weekend'.
