<articleBody>Organisations increasingly face pressure from customers, investors, regulators and procurement teams to demonstrate environmental progress. Until now, they have lacked a consistent, internationally recognised methodology for improving the sustainability of digital services and proving measurable results to stakeholders. ISO/IEC 20125-1:2026 changes that. Worldline led the two-year international collaboration to develop this standard, which defines 32 eco-design practices to help organisations improve digital services efficiency and embrace digital sufficiency: building and maintaining only what is needed, prioritizing value, reducing resource use and considering a service’s entire lifecycle. Sébastien Mandron, CSR Director at Worldline, said: "For the first time, enterprises have an internationally recognised framework that aligns digital transformation with sustainability objectives. The standard turns digital responsibility from a strategic aspiration into operational reality.” The benefits extend beyond environmental impact. The standard provides a credible framework for responding to growing customer sustainability requirements, improving procurement credentials and demonstrating measurable ESG progress. By establishing a common language for environmental performance, it enables organisations that build digital services and those that procure them to evaluate sustainability using shared, verifiable criteria. Vincent Courboulay, co-founder and Head of the INR Academy at the Institut du Numérique Responsable, which was one of the contributing organisations to the development of the standard added: "This standard creates a shared understanding between service providers and their customers. It transforms responsible digital principles into concrete, measurable commitments that both sides can track and verify.” ISO/IEC 20125-1:2026 is now available from ISO and national standards bodies worldwide. Worldline and Thales will share implementation best practices during the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee online event on 16 October 2026 at 10.10 CEST. Link to register. This event follows on from World Standards Day, which is being celebrated today and demonstrates the global movement to recognise the importance of international standards to limit the environmental impacts of the digital sector. Contributing organisations The ISO/IEC 20125-1:2026 standard was developed with contributions from organisations across the public and private sectors, including CGI France, Ctrl S, Logic Consulting, GreenSpector, Institut du Numérique Responsable, Nuageo, Orange, Pole Eco-conception, Specinov, Temesis (groupe Ctrl-a), Thales, Université la Rochelle, TerraOps, VINCI Energies, reflecting a collective industry-wide commitment to sustainable digital practices.
