Are you familiar with Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit? With this new generation of cards, your customers can now also comfortably shop online with ease. We’ll show you how you can properly integrate the new debit cards into your Web shop’s means of payment options – and thus tap into new customer segments and generate more turnover.

New debit cards – new customer potential and more turnover

With the introduction of Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit, online shopping takes on a whole new dimension for your customers. Mastercard Europe and Visa Inc. launched a new generation of means of payment with their debit cards, which are now increasingly being issued by banks and offer great added value for online commerce. You and your customers will benefit from additional options that were not previously available with Maestro and V PAY, as the new debit cards are easily accessible and now also offer customers without a credit card an attractive and simple online shopping experience. Just like with a credit card.

In summary, the new debit cards offer the full cost control of a debit card combined with the ability to make online payments and global acceptance.

Our blog post will teach you how you can properly integrate the new debit cards into your web shop’s means of payment options – and thus tap into new customer segments and increase your conversion rate.

Why are the Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit particularly relevant for e-commerce?

The new debit cards, which comply with the highest security standards, can be used around the world. In addition, they make online shopping – including via smartphone – easier. For example, Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit can be easily linked with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, thereby offering not only additional payment options in e-commerce, but also at the POS through smartphones, smartwatches and tablets.

An optimised web shop checkout process is one of the most crucial factors for success in doing online business. For a higher conversion rate, you should therefore have the right selection of payment methods: give your customers the choice and be sure to offer the new debit cards at the checkout. Because at the end of the day, all marketing measures are of no use if your customers ultimately don’t order the products they have placed in the shopping cart.

How do I indicate that I accept the new debit cards in the web shop?

There is no new logo for Debit Mastercard or Visa Debit. Both debit cards are displayed with the traditional credit card logo for Mastercard and Visa. However, in order for your customers to be able to pay with their new debit card, you should display it correctly. This makes the choice easier for the cardholder and prevents purchase disruptions.

Means of payment options in the Saferpay Payment Page

Do you use the means of payment options in your Saferpay Payment Page? If so, you don’t need to do anything else. We uniformly use the neutral “Pay by card” designation.

Distinct means of payment options

Do you use a distinct means of payment options in your web shop? We recommend the following three options for displaying brands in the checkout.

Option 1: Display according to brand

You show the Mastercard logo and the Visa logo only once in the means of payment options and choose a neutral designation – for example, “Card payment”.

Option 2: Credit cards and debit cards in the same section

You group both card types together under “Credit and debit cards” and show Mastercard and Visa only once.

Option 3: Different areas for credit cards and debit cards

You distinguish between the headings “Credit card” and “Debit card”. With this option, you must display the Mastercard logo and the Visa logo two times each.

Are you using an outdated Mastercard or Visa logo in your web shop?

Debit, credit, prepaid – here’s what characterises them

Debit cards
The distinguishing feature of debit cards is that the amount is debited to the account immediately (pay now).

Credit cards
The key characteristic of a credit card is that the debit is made from the account at a later date. The purchase price is not taken directly from the account, rather the bank pays it in the first instance. The amount is debited to the customer’s account on a monthly basis as a part of the total of all payments made (pay later). Credit cards often come with travel insurance included.

Prepaid cards
A prepaid card is topped up with an amount and can then be used to make payments until the credit has been used up. Of course, the process can be repeated as often as necessary.
