From farmers markets to tradies and beyond, Direct Pay is set to transform how Aotearoa pays and gets paid.
How “Direct Pay” Works
Using “Direct Pay” is simple and intuitive:
- The consumer scans a QR code displayed on the merchant’s smartphone or device
- The consumer then approves the payment in their banking app
- Once approved, the payment is instantly processed directly from the consumer’s bank account to the merchant’s account—completely seamless and secure—and the funds are guaranteed to settle the next day.
That’s it — just scan, approve, and pay. No need for cards, cash, or high-surcharge payment schemes. It’s fast, secure, and designed to enhance both the merchant and consumer experience.
Launching on Tap on Mobile — The First in New Zealand
We’re proud to announce that “Direct Pay” is now integrated directly into our Tap on Mobile SoftPOS solution, making our Tap on Mobile solution the first in New Zealand to support in-person, open banking-based account-to-account payments. This means merchants will be able to accept secure, instant payments using just their smartphones—making it more convenient for both merchants and consumers.
And there’s more to come: “Direct Pay” will soon be available in traditional retail stores, bringing open banking payments into everyday shopping experiences across New Zealand. Initially, payments will be made via QR codes, but as the solution scales, it will continue to evolve and incorporate even more convenient methods—enhancing in-store payment experiences and offering greater flexibility to both merchants and consumers.
