No terminals required – Tap on Mobile gives kiwi merchants more flexibility
21 / 11 / 2024
Terminals are now optional – Kiwi merchants can get paid on their Apple or Android device. Tap on Mobile is a new service which allows easy, secure payments via mobile phone or tablet.
As a merchant, you can now transform your phone or tablet into a terminal, letting you accept contactless payments wherever you are. Your Apple or Android device can accept Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay or any other digital wallet option.
“You don’t need any specialised hardware to get paid, just your phone or tablet,” explains Conrad Morgan, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Worldline. “Tap on Mobile is seamless to onboard and very cost-effective for merchants. It’s a fantastic solution that gives you a huge amount of flexibility, so it’s perfect for small businesses, Tradies wanting to take payments on site, farmers markets and outdoor events.”
Easy onboarding, no integration required
In-person payments have traditionally been processed using a physical point of sale terminal, sometimes called an ‘Eftpos machine’ or ‘device’. These terminals must be replaced and updated regularly to remain compliant with the latest security measures. Tap on Mobile lets you transact without needing a terminal, and without needing to stand at a fixed terminal-based point of sale.
“The instore shopping experience has changed, and it continues to change,” says Conrad. “We want to make it easier for merchants and consumers – more options and easier ways to pay. We all have our phones on hand wherever we go, so being able to pay or receive payments on our mobiles works for everyone.”
If you are a merchant who wants to get paid on a device, it starts with some ‘know your customer’ set-up. Then you download the app to your phone or tablet, and you can immediately start taking payments. Sales data is available through the standard portal available to all Worldline merchants, all data is kept private and secure, and the local 24-hour support service is always here to help.
Manage queues, get paid anywhere
With Christmas coming up and major sales underway, Tap on Mobile is also valuable for easing queues at busy times for larger retailers. Several staff members can be set up to take payments, allowing you to easily handle a rush of shoppers. With the ability to accept payments on any phone or tablet, staff members can open a new line or even walk down the queue and take payments on the go.
Being able to take payments anywhere in store means staff can help a customer find an item, then immediately pay for it without having to head to the check-out. Once again, this can manage queues and save time, particularly for big box retailers.
And because it’s so flexible, Tap on Mobile also frees up merchants to take payments at markets and other outdoor events. No more hiring a terminal, just use your phone.
Online EFTPOS will be available from 2025
From early 2025, Tap on Mobile will also support Online EFTPOS transactions. Online EFPTOS is popular with consumers and works for shoppers who don’t have a credit card loaded to their phone. It also comes with some major benefits for merchants: transaction costs are typically just 1%, funds are settled overnight, and there are no chargebacks.
“We work hard to keep innovating, so we can keep up with the fast-changing retail landscape,” says Conrad. “Online EFTPOS means merchants can accept contactless payments at a very affordable cost. It’s great for shoppers who prefer not to have a credit card, or anyone who likes to pay with EFTPOS and avoid surcharges.”
