UPI 2.0 Autopay

UPI 2.0 Autopay

UPI 2.0 Autopay, built on the robust infrastructure of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), offers a secure, efficient, and customer-centric way to manage recurring payments. It moves beyond traditional models, providing flexible and powerful flows that cater to diverse business needs and user preferences. At its core, UPI 2.0 Autopay empowers customers to set up pre-authorized mandates, allowing for automated debits without the need for repeated approvals for each transaction. This not only streamlines the payment process for consumers but also significantly reduces operational overhead and enhances predictability for businesses.

Worldline India is proud to offer this advanced solution through three distinct yet interconnected flows: Collect, Intent, and QR. Each flow is meticulously designed to address specific customer journeys and business environments, ensuring maximum adoption and customer satisfaction.

Let's explore each of these powerful flows in detail.

The Collect Flow - Merchant-Initiated Power

The Collect flow is designed for scenarios where the merchant, through their backend system (like a POS terminal or an integrated ERP), initiates the mandate registration process. This is ideal for businesses with a direct customer-facing touchpoint, where the sales executive or service provider plays a key role in onboarding.

How it Works -

Imagine a customer walking into a subscription service provider's outlet or a gym. The customer expresses interest in a recurring plan. The sales executive, using the merchant's POS system or a connected computer, guides the customer through the initial registration. The critical step here is the collection of the customer's UPI Virtual Payment Address (VPA). This VPA, which is essentially the customer's unique UPI ID (e.g., user@bank), is entered by the sales executive into the merchant's system. Once the VPA is captured, the merchant's system sends a mandate creation request to Worldline's payment gateway. Our gateway then initiates a request to the customer's banking app. The customer receives a notification within their banking app detailing the proposed mandate: the merchant's name, the recurring amount, the frequency (e.g., monthly), and the duration.

This is a crucial moment for transparency and customer control. The customer then reviews these details and authorizes the mandate directly within their banking app. This authorization is secured by the customer's biometrics (fingerprint/face ID) or UPI PIN — a process that does not involve transmitting sensitive One-Time Passwords (OTPs) externally, thereby enhancing security.

Upon successful authorization, the mandate status is updated to 'Active'. The merchant's system receives a confirmation, and the customer is also notified. From this point onwards, on the scheduled dates, Worldline's system, in coordination with the NPCI network, will automatically debit the pre-authorized amount from the customer's linked bank account and credit it to the merchant's account. The merchant has control to initiate these collections, ensuring timely revenue realization.

Use Case - Gym Membership Subscription

Consider a customer, Priya, who decides to join a premium gym. At the membership desk, the sales executive explains the annual subscription plan that can be paid monthly via UPI Autopay.

  • Onboarding - Priya agrees. The sales executive prompts her for the VPA (priya.k@bankpartner).
  • POS Entry - The executive enters Priya's VPA and the mandate details (₹3000/month, 12 months, 'Gym Membership Fee') into the gym's POS system.
  • Authorization Request - Priya receives an alert on her banking app: "GymFit requests recurring payment of ₹3000 monthly. Approve?"
  • Customer Approval - Priya reviews the details and approves using her fingerprint.
  • Mandate Activation - The mandate becomes active. The gym's system confirms successful registration.
  • Recurring Payments - Every month, on the 5th, ₹3000 is automatically debited from Priya's account and credited to GymFit's account.

Priya receives an SMS confirmation each time. If Priya ever needs to pause or cancel, she can do so directly from her banking app, demonstrating full customer empowerment. The Collect flow offers merchants significant control over the payment collection process, ideal for environments where direct sales interaction is common, ensuring structured and efficient customer onboarding.

The Intent Flow - Seamless In-App Experiences

The Intent flow is a game-changer for digital platforms, particularly subscription-based services operating through mobile apps or websites. It allows for a completely seamless in-app experience where the customer initiates and authorizes the mandate without ever leaving the application they are using.

How it Works -

Imagine you are using an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service or a SaaS application. You decide to upgrade to a premium subscription that requires a recurring monthly payment. The application presents you with options, including a "Subscribe with UPI Autopay" button, often highlighting benefits like a discount for opting in. When you tap this button, the application doesn't redirect you to an external browser or a separate app. Instead, it triggers an Intent — a specific message understood by the Android operating system to launch another application.

This Intent message contains all the necessary mandate details (merchant name, amount, frequency, purpose). Your default UPI-enabled banking app is then automatically launched, pre-filled with all the mandate information. You see the details clearly within your trusted banking environment and can authorize it with your biometric credentials or PIN.

Crucially, after authorization, the system intelligently returns you to the original application (the OTT service or SaaS platform) without any manual intervention. The application receives a confirmation of the mandate's status, and you are immediately granted access to premium features. The recurring ₹199 debits then proceed automatically each month as per the mandate. This flow minimizes user friction, reduces cart abandonment, and significantly boosts conversion rates by embedding payment authorization directly into the user's workflow.

Use Case - Monthly Coffee Subscription App

Consider Rohan, who uses a 'CoffeeClub' mobile app for his daily coffee needs. He decides to opt for their ₹199/month premium subscription that offers unlimited deliveries.

  • In-App Selection - Rohan opens the CoffeeClub app, navigates to subscriptions, and selects the 'Premium - ₹199/month' plan.
  • Tap to Subscribe - He taps the "Subscribe with UPI Autopay" button.
  • Intent Trigger - The CoffeeClub app sends an Intent. Rohan's banking app automatically opens.
  • Mandate Details - The banking app displays: "CoffeeClub Autopay Mandate: ₹199 monthly. Authorize?"
  • Biometric Approval - Rohan approves using his fingerprint.
  • Seamless Return - Rohan is instantly returned to the CoffeeClub app.
  • Subscription Active - The app confirms: "Your Premium subscription is Active! Enjoy your coffee." From now on, ₹199 is debited monthly.

The Intent flow is the epitome of a frictionless user experience, allowing businesses to integrate recurring payments seamlessly within their digital ecosystems.

The QR Flow - Instant Onboarding at Physical Touchpoints

The QR flow bridges the gap between the physical and digital worlds, offering a rapid and convenient way for customers to register mandates by scanning a QR code presented at a physical location. This is particularly effective for quick onboarding processes in retail environments.

How it Works -

Imagine a customer visiting a coffee shop for the first time and deciding to sign up for a monthly subscription service offered at the counter. Instead of filling out forms or having staff manually enter details, the customer is presented with a dynamic QR code, perhaps on a tablet, a poster, or even a printed slip. The customer simply uses their smartphone's camera or their preferred UPI app to scan this QR code. The QR code contains all necessary mandate information — merchant details, amount, frequency, duration, and a callback URL.

Upon scanning, the customer's UPI app is launched, and all mandate details are automatically populated, much like in the Intent flow. The customer reviews the pre-filled information within their trusted banking app and authorizes the mandate using biometrics or PIN. Once authorized, the banking app sends a confirmation back to the merchant's system via the callback URL (often in near real-time).

The customer might also receive an immediate confirmation on their phone, and the merchant's system (e.g., a POS or a tablet display) updates to show that the subscription is active. This entire process, from scanning the QR code to mandate activation, can be completed in under a minute, offering unparalleled speed and convenience for both the customer and the merchant.

Use Case - Coffee Shop Counter Subscription

Rohan is at his favorite coffee shop, "The Daily Grind," and sees a sign: "Subscribe for our Monthly Coffee Club - ₹199/month! Scan to Join!"

  • QR Display - Rohan scans the QR code displayed at the counter.
  • App Launch and Pre-fill - His UPI app opens, showing the mandate details for The Daily Grind's ₹199/month subscription, all filled automatically.
  • Review & Approve - Rohan quickly reviews and approves with his fingerprint.
  • Instant Confirmation - A confirmation appears on the cafe's counter tablet: "Mandate Approved! Rohan subscribed." Rohan also gets an SMS from his bank confirming the mandate registration.
  • Enjoy Coffee - Rohan can immediately start enjoying his monthly subscription benefits.

The QR flow is exceptionally useful for point-of-sale registrations, enhancing customer experience through speed and eliminating manual data entry errors.
