How Micro-Donations Are Transforming Everyday Payments into Social Impact

22 / 12 / 2025

In today's world, consumers seek simple ways to support causes they care about. Micro-donations integrated directly into the payment process offer an elegant solution: turning routine transactions into vehicles for positive change.

The concept is simple: when paying for a purchase, consumers can round up the total to the nearest pound or euro, with the difference automatically directed to verified social initiatives. This happens seamlessly within the existing payment flow, requiring no additional steps.

Worldline’s network of micro-donation partners includes microDON, Pennies, and Worldcoo in Spain, each contributing to a growing ecosystem of purpose-driven payment experiences across Europe.

The power of collective contribution

While individual micro-donations might seem small, their collective impact is substantial. In 2025 alone, Worldline's collaboration with Worldcoo facilitated over €2.6 million in donations through 13.6 million individual contributions, demonstrating the strong momentum of this model.

These funds supported over 50 diverse initiatives ranging from childhood cancer research and emergency relief for vulnerable communities and refugees, to marine and wildlife conservation projects and homelessness support programmes among many more – demonstrating how small contributions can address pressing social, educational, health and environmental challenges.

Real impact: A hospital's story

A visit by Worldcoo and corporate partners to Hospital Sant Joan de Déu's Paediatric Cancer Center in 2024 reveals the real-world impact of micro-donations. Thanks to contributions from customers of AREAS, one of Spain's major retailers, over €133,000 has been allocated to support the center's critical mission: improving childhood cancer survival rates, reducing long-term side effects, and advancing breakthrough research in treatment and prevention.

Benefits across the ecosystem

For merchants, micro-donation systems enhance customer engagement while providing meaningful social impact metrics. For consumers, they offer a frictionless way to support important causes during their everyday shopping experiences.

"At Worldline, we believe every transaction holds the potential to do good," explains David Valero Compte, Head of Global Accounts Retail & Country Manager Merchant Services Iberia. " By embedding micro-donations into our payment systems, we transform routine purchases into opportunities for positive change. Our strategic partnerships with the likes of Worldcoo has been instrumental in advancing this vision, allowing us to lead meaningful social impact initiatives across key markets.”

Tania Quintero, CEO Worldcoo, adds: "Our mission is to make giving part of daily life. With Worldline's support, we're scaling our impact and empowering people to contribute - one payment at a time.”

Looking forward

Following successful implementation in Spain, Worldcoo’s model is now expanding to support education, climate action, health, and humanitarian aid across more regions.

The initiative demonstrates how payment technology can evolve beyond simple transactions to create meaningful social value. By making giving simple, transparent, and integrated into everyday actions, we're helping build a more sustainable approach to supporting causes that matter.
