This collaboration marks a milestone in defining a standardized, interoperable framework for payments in the upcoming wave of AI-driven commerce. The shift of commerce towards agentic processes requires addressing the questions of authorisation, authenticity and accountability, which is precisely AP2’s mission.

What is the AP2 protocol

The Agents to Payments Protocol is an open protocol to ensure secure, robust agent-led payments. By providing a common, secure framework, AP2 aims to reduce fragmentation and enable smoother, more reliable interactions across the payments ecosystem.

Why this shift matters

The rise of autonomous agents and their ability to initiate a payment requires a system that is not only secure but also flexible enough to handle a diverse set of use cases. 

To realize the full potential of agentic commerce, the underlying infrastructure must support all use cases—even the most complex. Consider scenarios like booking flight tickets when price reaches a defined budget threshold, booking a holiday package with flights, hotels, car rentals and insurances in one-go, getting in line to buy concert tickets when they go on sale, buying an out-of-stock product when it’s back on shelf, managing subscription tiers between streaming providers, planning a birthday gift in a timely manner. These examples illustrate the breadth of requirements that a unified protocol must address, from real-time negotiations to timely fulfilment and dynamic pricing.
