Learning Expedition 3 days to discover Lisbon’s innovative scene

From January 15th to 17th, 22 Worldliners gathered in Lisbon for a short but fast-paced trip focused on innovation and entrepreneurship. During 3 days, the winners of last year’s WIN Awards, our internal innovation contest, were immersed in a learning expedition that enabled them to explore some of Lisbon’s innovative and entrepreneurial scene, while enjoying time in the best avant-garde spots of the beautiful Portuguese capital city.

WIN Learning Expedition, a journey to get inspired

A WIN Learning Expedition combines innovation with the discovery of a major European city. Through this immersive trip, several of Worldline’s most talented innovators are invited to discover some of the best innovative aspects and resources of a city and to make contacts, start discussions, imagine new ideas and identify new opportunities.

During three intensive days, the winners of the 2017 WIN Awards had the chance to meet various local players, from green co-working space to cutting-edge research foundation, and to take a deep dive into an inspiring and energizing ecosystem.

Discoveries’ highlights

In Lisbon, our winning Worldliners had the opportunity to meet startups — as small as the 3-people Payabi, presenting a solution to control payables, or as fast-growing as the Portuguese ‘unicorn’ Farfetch. They discovered the Lisbon branch of the co-working space operator Second Home, discussed entrepreneurship dynamics and ecosystem in the Beta-I incubator, witnessed the vision and ambition behind the Hub criativo do Beato, felt the creativity of the Village underground, understood the innovative societal role of the Fablab Lisboa’s prototyping and experimentation space and appreciated the outstanding role of hi-tech in biomedical research at the Champalimaud foundation.

The Learning Expedition is a great opportunity to meet people working in different parts of the company, learning what they are doing and how they are doing it.

Why you should visit Lisbon too

From startups to public initiatives and very active communities, participants of this Learning Expedition discovered a highly dynamic and truly creative city that has initiated a huge transformation. Lots of projects have started, lots are still incubating, old buildings are being restored and repurposed… The mood in Lisbon is in strong contrast with the much more traditional image that many of us have in mind.

It is a very nice city, I have discovered that it is much more entrepreneurial than I had expected, with many startups, making Lisbon a new center for innovation worth keeping an eye on.

WIN Awards, Worldline’s innovation competition

The WIN Awards are Worldline’s internal annual innovation competition. This competition has been designed to promote innovation throughout the company at the global level, highlight advanced or completed innovative projects and reward the best of them. The WIN Awards are opened to everyone in Worldline. Employees can team up to post a project. Each innovation counts. It is why there is no restriction in terms of the kind of innovation submitted. The WIN Awards are opened to all projects significantly advanced or completed in the previous year. Since its creation, the WIN Awards have gathered 3,000+ participants from 19+ countries and awarded 150+ innovators.

The WIN Awards is a great opportunity not just to compete and show how innovative you are, but also to look at other teams and learn from them.
