Wero: unlocking pan-European digital commerce.
Delivering a single, instant and secure way to accept online payments across major EU markets
While digital commerce continues to grow in scale and value, there is one key challenge that continues to hold back acceptance: fragmentation. Across Europe, online businesses must still contend with a patchwork of local account-to-account (A2A) schemes, card-based wallets and widely varying consumer expectations. Wero, the new pan-European payment solution from the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is designed to address this challenge by providing a single, instant and secure way to handle online payments across major EU markets.
A unified payment approach for the digital economy
Built on Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) Instant Credit Transfer rails, Wero enables instant A2A payments, moving funds directly between bank accounts within seconds, around the clock. It launches first in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, with further European expansion planned.
For digital merchants, Wero creates a level of reach that previously required dealing with multiple integrations and unfamiliar local payment options. It also aligns with the EU’s strategic push towards payments sovereignty by reducing reliance on international card networks and large technology providers.
Wero arrives at a time when payments-related regulations are shifting. The EU’s Instant Payments Regulation (IPR) mandates access to sub-10 second, 24/7 instant payments across the euro area, and the upcoming PSD3 and Payment Services Regulation aim to strengthen consumer protection and streamline open banking frameworks. By being both bank-authenticated and A2A-based, Wero is designed to operate seamlessly within these new requirements, and to remain compliant as they evolve.
A better experience for both buyers and sellers
With Wero payments, consumers complete authentication through their bank or the Wero app using biometric or PIN approval. The payment is confirmed immediately, and funds are settled in real time. For merchants, this eliminates the delays associated with card clearing cycles, and reduces dependence on card details that may expire or require periodic updating. For digital businesses where fast, reliable online payments are essential – such as streaming, SaaS, gaming or marketplace environments – this reduces churn and makes recurring revenue flows more reliable.
Online businesses also benefit from reduced exposure to fraud and chargeback disputes. This is because authentication happens through the customer’s own banking environment, and the scheme provides a structured dispute resolution framework rather than traditional chargebacks.
Practical enablement through Worldline
For businesses already using Worldline, adding Wero is a straightforward process. The payment method will be enabled in all interfaces of the Global Collect: Connect Payment Suite (including RESTful API, MyCheckout and various SDKs), TravelHub, Shopping plugins, and will appear within the same single-reporting, settlement and dashboard tools. After account set-up and credential configuration, online businesses complete testing with support from implementation teams before going live.
Because Wero becomes part of Worldline’s broader portfolio, online businesses also benefit from single-view reporting, real-time data access and a consistent operational model across payment types. This continuity reduces onboarding effort, and avoids the need to manage separate processes for reconciliation, refunds or compliance.
Wero’s phased roll-out is set to continue across Europe, and its roadmap includes features that are particularly relevant to digital commerce, including subscription management, one-click payments, Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) capabilities and potential digital identity integration. As national schemes such as the Netherlands’ iDEAL transition into the Wero ecosystem, the European market will move closer to a unified A2A standard that supports both consumer familiarity and merchant scalability.
For digital businesses planning their next stage of growth, Wero offers a structural upgrade in handling online payments across in Europe – an instant, secure and scalable A2A payment solution built for the future digital economy.
