Worldline, the digital partner of the Under the Pole III expedition, is making its WL Media e-Archiving solution available to the UTP ecosystem to host all the expedition’s media content

Worldline [Euronext: WLN], the European market leader in payment and transaction services is making the WL Media e-Archiving solution available to the Under The Pole expedition to host all its media content securely on a single platform. The solution will allow the content to be delivered to directors and all those involved in the Under The Pole III program around the world to help improve knowledge and protect ocean waters.

La Défense, Paris, France

Since 2018 Worldline has been the digital partner of the Under The Pole III expedition led by Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout and Ghislain Bardout and backed by Roland Jourdain’s Explore endowment fund. The third in the series of Under The Pole expeditions is exploring deepwater ecosystems in the Twilight Zone - the “midwater” layer that lies between 30m and 150m below the surface. The aim is to deepen knowledge about the zone, which to date, has hardly been explored and studied as well as raise awareness about the importance of protecting the oceans for a more sustainable world.

Energised by the pioneering spirit of its founders (Ghislain and Emmanuelle Bardout), the team of Under The Pole divers working alongside research scientists has embarked on an unprecedented exploratory mission. Starting in 2017 and with a plan to continue until 2021, the team has been touring the world’s oceans (Arctic 2017-2018, Pacific 2018-2019, Antarctic 2020-2021 and Atlantic 2021)aboard the WHY polar schooner.

The Under The Pole III expedition is supported by the Explore endowment fund established in 2013 by explorer Roland Jourdain. The fund supports exploration projects pursuing scientific discoveries, innovation and awareness-raising aligned with the major contemporary environmental challenges.

The partnership with Under The Pole dovetails with Worldline’s corporate social responsibility policy and initiatives through skills-based sponsorship. Worldline’s employees are committed to helping local community address health, education and environmental protection challenges.

A solution supporting the Under The Pole submarine exploration

Founded and developed specifically for the Under The Pole expedition, the WL Media e-Archiving solution will allow the Under The Pole explorers to store, archive, classify and share all the media content (photos, videos, documents) that was recorded and collected during their missions on a centralised and secure basis. Immense industrial-scale storage volumes are involved and the Worldline team that developed the solution has already up-loaded 40 terabytes of data collected by the expedition during their previous missions and expects to store 200 terabytes of additional data from the Under The Pole III program.

All the media content produced by the team and the results of their research and scientific discoveries are intended to be shared in order to help raise awareness among the public at large, particularly the younger generation, about the need to protect and conserve the oceans and the environment.

Marc-Henri Desportes, Deputy CEO of Worldline: “We are extremely proud to support a project that will harness technological innovation to advance scientific research and raise public awareness of the need to protect the oceans which is a crucial priority today and for future generations. Our WL Media e-Archiving solution will simplify things for the scientific community so that more can be learned about our marine ecosystems and in order that they can be better protected. Our teams have pulled out all the stops to deliver the expertise and technological innovation needed to advance this incredibly important scientific research.”

Ghislain Bardout, Director of the Under The Pole expedition: “Emmanuelle and I are delighted with our partnership with Worldline and the roll-out of this digital solution. It allows us to store all the unprecedented media recordings we have made over the past 10 years in the Arctic and currently in French Polynesia.”
