The mobile success story between Worldline and BNPP began in 2011, with the development of the P2P transfer applications "My Transfers" and then "My Wallet", which implements the Paylib online payment solution.
After 5 years of fruitful collaboration, the adventure continued and in 2016 BNPP entrusted Worldline with the redesign of its iOS mobile banking applications with the objective of bringing together all the use cases in a single application.
Following a successful first production release of the "Mes Comptes" application for BNPP customers and "Hello bank!" for customers of its 100% digital offer in 2017, the collaboration continued between BNPP's business and marketing teams and Worldline's mobile development teams, around a fully AGILE process, enabling new features to be delivered to BNPP and Hello bank! users every month.
In 2019, Hello bank! completely overhauled its offer, aiming to be present on all digital channels. As Hello bank!’s partner across the Apple ecosystem, Worldline was tasked to carry out a major update of the Hello bank! iOS app (iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch).
At the same time, Apple was working on a technology to facilitate the adaptation of an iOS app to macOS. Indeed, macOS and iOS being two distinct software platforms, it was not possible until then to port an iOS app to the Mac.
The Hello bank! team wanted to take advantage of this new technology and offer its Mac users a complete banking application, which was unheard of on the French banking market. The objective was clear: Hello bank! would be the first French bank to offer a complete banking app available on macOS.
To reach this goal, Worldline and Hello bank! gave themselves the means to match their ambition. So, when it was rumored that Apple might officially make their technology available at WWDC 2019 - Apple's annual conference that took place in early June 2019 in California and brought together more than 5,000 developers - Worldline and Hello bank! decided to go and attend the event.
WWDC 2019 - Convention Center, San José, California
This quickly proved to be a winning bet, as Apple indeed presented its technology - called Catalyst - at the opening conference. From then on, our presence at the WWDC made total sense, as we were able to exchange directly with Apple's engineers. At the end of the event, we left with the conviction that the port would be technically feasible.
A few weeks later, a new opportunity arose. Apple offered us to participate in a workshop in their Paris offices. For 4 days, we were accompanied by an Apple engineer specialized in the Catalyst technology. This meeting allowed us to develop a first functional prototype.
The technical obstacles having been removed, the Hello bank! team gave their agreement to start the macOS app project. Workshops were then conducted to define the features that would constitute the MVP. Work was also done to adapt the ergonomics of the iOS app to the requirements of macOS (for example, the implementation of a menu bar) and thus provide the same comfort of use on the Mac than on the iPad, in particular through simplified navigation between accounts and biometric authentication.
As a result of these efforts, the macOS Hello bank! app was released on the App Store at the end of July 2020. The initial goal was achieved, as it was indeed the first real macOS banking app available in France! Proof that Hello bank!'s intuition was the right one, the macOS app got very good feedback from users (4.4/5 rating) and, to top it all off, was immediately ranked first in the "Finance" category. Finally, the online press specialized in the Apple ecosystem did not fail to relay the news !
