Meet a Worldliner: Julia, Head of Public & Regulatory Affairs, New Zealand

Imagine paying, checking, and collecting loyalty, all simultaneously and without having to take a single card out of your wallet. This is what Public Affairs Specialist Julia wants to contribute to on a daily basis at Worldline.

What’s a typical day in the life of the Products and Solutions team at Worldline? 

My day consists of a lot of writing and a lot of talking. I gather ideas from our experts at Worldline New Zealand, I meet with subject matter experts to ensure I understand our products & services, I meet with regulators and I respond to consultations. A lot is going on in the payments space and I want to communicate effectively with both internal & external stakeholders so I may influence outcomes that are beneficial to Worldline and are aligned with our strategy.

How does the work you do in Public and Regulatory Affairs impact the world around us? 

Here at Worldline NZ we want to make things easier and better for everyone. We are looking to incorporate digital ID with our open banking payments products – imagine you pay, you verify, you collect your loyalty, all at the same time and without having to get a single card out of your wallet. You don’t even need a physical wallet!

How has Worldline helped you develop and grow professionally?

When I first started at Worldline, my role was mostly commercial law with a splattering of competition and regulatory law. The changing regulatory landscape has meant that Worldline supported a move and a new role focusing on public affairs, regulatory and competition law (which is the area of law I enjoy the most). Worldline has also supported me in joining various industry working groups and councils and encouraged my burgeoning media presence. Knowing the business trusts me, means a lot.  

What is the culture and the people like at Worldline?

Here in New Zealand, we have a great work culture; it’s inclusive, it’s fun and it’s caring. We are always up for a celebration and we celebrate our successes often. We have a wonderful office space, and we have the flexibility to work remotely. We have collaborative ways of working and there is no blame culture – I feel comfortable being myself and expressing my opinions and thoughts freely.  

What´s key to success when working in a global company like Worldline?

Even though New Zealand is a long way away from the rest of the world, Worldline HQ has made their experts readily available and have helped ensure that our regulatory strategies are aligned. Communication is key and Worldline is great at it. 

What would be your perfect weekend? 

My perfect summer weekend is heading to a remote beach and spending the weekend with friends and family. We love going to the Coromandel Peninsula, eating good food and relaxing in the sun. My perfect winter weekend is similar but at a ski station and not the beach!
