Simplifying European digital identity wallet adoption for banks

10 / 08 / 2026

Europe’s digital identity landscape is entering a decisive phase. With eIDAS 2.0 (the updated electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services regulation) setting the legal framework for the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW), banks have until the end of 2027 to accept certified European wallets for Know Your Customer (KYC) and authentication use cases.

On paper, 2027 may sound far away. But financial institutions need to design end-user journeys, integrate the wallets with existing systems, train internal teams and inform end-users. This leaves only a few months to complete budgeting and planning to be ready on time. In this blog, we focus on the next step: how banks can move from awareness to a concrete implementation path, and how the collaboration between Worldline and Lissi GmbH, an independent provider for the integration of EUDIW into digital processes, accelerates this journey.

One integration point for a growing wallet ecosystemConnecting to the EUDIW ecosystem is not a single, one-off integration. Every European Member State must issue a certified digital identity wallet to its citizens by the end of 2026, and every regulated financial institution shall accept all of them by the end of 2027, with around 40 wallet players expected to be live by then, and more to follow in the coming years. At the same time, the technical rules and security standards governing how these wallets work together are still evolving as the ecosystem matures.

Building these connections in-house typically requires an estimated 12 to 18-month development cycle just to reach baseline compliance. This is followed by a permanent maintenance load, requiring continuous tracking of each wallet implementation and the ongoing Architecture Reference Framework updates. For most banks, that investment does not translate into a competitive differentiator. It simply keeps them compliant on a technical level.

Rather than dealing with multiple European digital identity wallet implementations, financial institutions benefit from one integration point that is fully updated and aligned with eIDAS 2.0 requirements.

Combining complementary expertise This is exactly where Worldline and Lissi come in together. The long-term strategic collaboration between Worldline and Lissi combines two highly complementary areas of expertise: Lissi’s experience pioneering digital identity solutions in banking onboarding since 2019, combined with Worldline’s long-standing payment expertise, fraud prevention and authentication services.

We have joined forces to bring wallet connectivity, banking infrastructure and regulatory expertise into a single managed service: the Worldline Digital Identity Hub. As new wallets are certified or protocols evolve, platform updates are handled seamlessly so banks do not have to continuously rebuild integrations.

As an example, our Digital Identity Hub connects natively to the Worldline Access Control Server already used to secure card payments. This ensures that wallet-based identity checks benefit directly from the same proven fraud and risk controls. Additionally, the service is hosted in private European data centres and remains continuously aligned with eIDAS 2.0 requirements and strict data sovereignty standards.

Moving time-to-market from years to weeks For banks, this collaboration is designed to deliver tangible value. By managing the service on their behalf, we help them become compliant on time and stay compliant as the regulation evolves. Time-to-market can move from years to weeks, and costs shift from a large upfront investment to a manageable operating expense. Tested in real conditions through our active participation in the Large Scale Pilots, banks can rely on a service that is already validated in the field.

The combined architecture is now live, and our joint engineering teams are actively onboarding the first financial institutions to the platform. Joining early gives banks immediate access to European Digital Identity Wallet sandboxes to test and validate their journeys well before the 2027 deadline.
